While reading an article in the Chicago Sun-Times concerning charitable organizations, is was explained that charities, non-profits and other tax-exempt organizations are required to file Form 990 or Form 990-EZ with the Internal Revenue Service each year to maintain their tax-exempt status. This form requires disclosure of potential conflicts of interest, compensation of board members and staff, and other details having to do with financial accountability and avoidance of fraud, and said documents must be available for public inspection. As a concerned citizen, a quick Google query resulted in several sites that makes these types of documents available for public scrutiny, including the Foundation Center. (http://foundationcenter.org/findfunders/990finder/) Feel free to exercise your taxpayer rights and check-out your favorite organization! I have checked a few non-profits and found some very "fictional" reading! Please note that searching by zip code gets better results... They (allegedly) are not open to interpretation and are designed to help the group function in an orderly manner (and not to appease personal agendas). In essence, they are written in stone. (Ha ha...) He who is first to cast the shadow of fault usually has the most to hide...
